SYNOPSIS

While working for a shady real-estate company in Shanghai, Bryan Zellerman is framed by his corrupt employers. Faced with a choice between escape or finding out the truth behind his betrayal, his path veers terribly out of control.

MADE IN CHINA follows the events of an arrogant young graduate student from the United States as he journeys across the Pacific, taking a position offered by a prestigious but unfamiliar company in Shanghai. Unbeknownst to Bryan, the corporation's executives have bankrupted the company, framing him and leaving no traces as they disappear after his third day at work. With authorities closing in, Bryan flees Shanghai and makes his way deep into the countryside, passing through strange pockets and dark corners of developing China. Seeing the havoc slowly wrought over long years by his former company's greed and deceit, Bryan now searches to find more concrete links as to who was behind his betrayal. Faced with the choice of escape or learning the truth, his path veers terribly out of control.

JANUARY 1, 2021: MADE IN CHINA has just completed it’s first festival screening and taken home TWO Awards! The film was given the “AUDIENCE AWARD” for the most-screened film in the festival in addition to it’s earlier win of the prize for “BEST ORIGINAL CONTENT.” Stay tuned for more updates on when you can see the film next!

DECEMBER 21, 2020: We are delighted to announce that MADE IN CHINA will make it’s European festival debut at the Lonely Wolf: London International Film Festival!

DECEMBER 2020: MADE IN CHINA has been accepted into it’s first TWO FILM FESTIVALS and WON IT’S FIRST AWARD! The film was honored and won it’s Category for “BEST ORIGINAL CONTENT” at the Lonely Wolf: London International Film Festival and will be screening virtually! SUMMER 2020: After several years of editing, one near-release, a pair of re-shoots, more editing, a gorgeous score, another editing pass and a long-awaited sound-mix the film is finally completed.

2015: Arriving back in the USA having spent the majority of his Kickstarter funds in production, Brendan and the team of MADE IN CHINA begin a long and arduous self-funded post-production process.  

2013 - 2014: After completing a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the film Brendan embarks on a pair of scouting trips back to Zhejiang to visit his friends in China while locking up locations, hiring crew and auditioning local actors for the film. Upon completing pre-production Brendan flew back one more time again, armed with a crew of only two other people from the United States. Actor Ethan Landry and Cinematographer Adam Severi make their first trip to Shanghai and Yiwu, completing production with a crew consisting of people from over a dozen countries and playing out over four exhausting weeks during November and December.

2012: The process of filming MADE IN CHINA began nearly 8 years ago when Writer/Director Brendan Merrill received his first official Work Visa invitation letter from a business in Zhejiang Province, China. After his first six months living in the rural hamlet of Yiwu (a four-hour drive from the megalopolis Shanghai) and working for an Italian manufacturing company, Brendan began to write down an idea that would eventually become MADE IN CHINA.
